Wolf Whistle Wounds Aim For The Heart On Debut Album

When it comes to matters of the heart, Australian production duo Wolf Whistle Wounds are well-versed veterans, making their debut album a bold statement of intent.

Wolf Whistle Wounds is the newest project from local hip hop stalwarts Buffy Prescott and Flames, combining their respective influences and boiling them down to create a distinctive sound for themselves.

“My roots started in hip hop mixed with punk,” Buffy explains.

“But my delivery leaned more towards hip hop because the rhyme patterns and ability to fit more content into what you’re trying to say attracted me a bit. They’re my two main drawcards and I think a good amalgamation of that comes out in product with Wolf Whistle Wounds.

“I quote Flames, my partner in all this, he says: ‘we never sit down and say hey, we have to write a song that sounds like this’. We write the song and what comes out comes out, and the influences – you can do a deep dive and find them in there but there’s no intent for them to be in there. We’ve always tried to blaze our own trail and get something original.”

Longtime colleagues and collaborators, Buffy says he and Flames embarked on Wolf Whistle Wounds after years of working together on various other projects.

“I’ve done production and worked with him in most of the acts I’ve done over time, but this is just the two of us focussing on the alchemy we have,” he says.

“The synergy we have couldn’t be ignored and we had to knuckle down and just be the two of us. We complement each other enough to go in the directions we want our art to go in. Wolf Whistle Wounds was shedding every other collaborator that wed worked with, and for many different reasons: life got in the way for some, challenges got in the way for some and then we found ourselves alone, so to speak. It just clicked and made sense that this was the collaboration that was going to produce the art that we have always strived for.”

Wolf Whistle wounds have released two singles from their forthcoming self-titled album so far, ‘Gaslight District’ and ‘Imposter Sindrone’, showcasing two very different sides of their artistry.

“The release of both of them like that is intentional,” Buffy says.

“The way we make our music, trying not to be pigeonholed and trying not to sound like anything else, is a blessing and a curse in that you can segregate yourself from everybody at the same time as trying to say here’s something new.

“Whenever Flames and I have made music, it’s always been with the intent of trying to just sound like us. There is a difference in sound and delivery but as the album rolls out and the songs start coming out, there is definitely a throughline whether it’s lyrically or sonically.”

Wolf Whistle Wounds will be drip-feeding the new album with single releases over the following months leading up to a full release mid-year. Buffy explains how the album has been carefully crafted around the central theme of the Wolf Whistle Wounds project.

“Ultimately, it’s encapsulating the residual effects of emotional warfare and we all have those. It’s the theme of the project too,” he says.

“These songs certainly stand on their own. That’s intentional; we want them to stand alone by themselves and have people come to them, but there is a narrative arc to the LP we have put together. If people want to delve into it and follow and find that story, that’s awesome, but I still feel like the songs will stand alone and have the power that they need to as singles.”

‘Gaslight District’ and ‘Imposter Sindrone’ are available now.
