Noel and Liam Gallagher have finally achieved their lifelong goal of being bigger than the Beatles. Oasis’ 1995 sophomore album ‘(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?’ has officially become the UK’s bestselling studio album of all time, surpassing The Beatles’ 1967 album ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’. Updated figures were released as part of the 70th anniversary of the Official Charts Company, which compiles the UK’s weekly album and singles charts. Oasis came in at number three behind Queen’s’ Greatest Hits’ and ABBA’s ‘Gold’ compilation albums.
Paramount Skydance’s takeover of Warner Bros is on hold in the US after a California-led coalition of 12 states argued the merger would irreparably harm competition. EU regulators gave the deal the green light after Paramount agreed to end its distribution agreement with Universal Pictures in Europe. The takeover is also being opposed by the Writers Guild of America (WGA), which warns the deal threatens jobs and wages. The 30 September deadline to close the deal is fast approaching, after which Paramount will have to pay Warner Bros shareholders a “ticking fee” of roughly $7m a day until it does.
Visionary guitar maker Wayne Charvel has passed away at the age of 85. Wayne founded the brand as a workshop in 1974 after working at Fender for three years. His namesake guitars became iconic instrument in rock and heavy metal, used by greats such as Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen), Chris Holmes (W.A.S.P.), Gary Moore, Warren DeMartini (Ratt), Jake E. Lee (Ozzy Osbourne), Eddie Ojeda (Twisted Sister), George Lynch (Dokken), Allan Holdsworth, Shawn Lane, and Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi).
