In Memory Of Shelley Duvall
American actress Shelley Duvall passed away on 11 July 2024 aged 75, following complications from diabetes.
Duvall’s long-time partner Dan Gilroy announced she had died in her sleep at her home in Blanco, Texas on Thursday.
The Texas-born actress enjoyed a lengthy film and television career from the 1970s through to the early 2000s, with a brief reappearance in 2023.
She was discovered at a house party and was quickly cast in Robert Altman’s 1970 film ‘Brewster McCloud’. Shelley would become a regular of Altman’s films, with roles in ‘Thieves Like Us’, ‘3 Women’, ‘Nashville’ and ‘Popeye’.
Her performance as Wendy Torrance alongside Jack Nicholson in Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 classic ‘The Shining’ became the defining image of horror. However, the hostile atmosphere Kubrick deliberately cultivated on set would come at a significant cost to Duvall’s mental health.
Duvall pivoted from acting to producing and hosting children’s programming in the late ‘80s and opened her own production company Think Entertainment.
Selling Think Entertainment in 1993 and retiring as a producer, Shelley returned to acting and performed in mostly supporting roles throughout the ‘90s. She played a minor role in the 2002 independent film ‘Manna From Heaven’ before taking an extended hiatus from public life.
In 2023, she reemerged for her final role in the indie horror film ‘The Forest Hills’.
An atypical Hollywood starlet for her time, Shelley Duvall possessed a unique natural charm that enamoured her to audiences and those who knew her alike.
‘Become What You Are’, the new album from The Daisycutters is available now via MADCAP Global Music, JB Hi-Fi and independent music retailers.
