Goodbye, Dolly Parton, We Were Not Worthy
Into a dark and dirty world, Dolly Parton shone a beacon of wholesome joy.
She was the undisputed rhinestone queen of country music, with a sparkling personality that made her beloved far beyond her extensive catalogue of timeless music.
With Dolly’s passing, we bid farewell not only to a consummate entertainer but also a truly unique and beautiful soul that this world needed but didn’t always deserve. While her music made Dolly Parton a household name, it was her irrepressible spirit and zeal for life that made her a legend.
Even if you’re not a fan of her music, it’s impossible not be enamoured by her shimmering charisma and authentic Southern charm. She naturally possessed that rare kind of personable magnetism that can’t be learned, faked, or fabricated by even the most seasoned performer. What Dolly had cannot be replicated, only admired.
It was in the rustic setting of her childhood that Dolly learned the valuable skills that would one day make her a global star. She was born in Tennessee in 1946, the fourth of 12 children, to Robert Lee Parton Sr. and Avie Lee Parton.
Robert was a sharecropper and tobacco farmer who, despite his illiteracy, taught Dolly about business and how to make money, while her mother instilled a deep love of music. Through her mother Avie’s Welsh ancestry, Dolly inherited a knowledge of traditional songs and ballads brought to the region by European immigrants.
This down-home education proved foundational to her success throughout her decades-long career. By the age of ten, she was singing on local radio and television in Tennessee, and at 13 made her first professional recording, ‘Puppy Love’.
She released her debut album ‘Hello, I’m Dolly’ in 1967, kickstarting an extraordinary catalogue featuring 49 studio albums and more than 3000 songs written by Dolly. Among her best-known hits are immortal songs like ‘9 To 5’, ‘Jolene’, and ‘Coat Of Many Colours’. In 1973, Dolly also wrote and recorded ‘I Will Always Love You’, which became a hit for Whitney Houston in 1992.
Onstage and off, Dolly lived her life unabashed and unafraid to be herself. She had a presence that could not be ignored, for better or worse. Her public image as a buxom, big-haired, blonde Southern belle made her a target for critics who called her trashy. Rather than being deterred, Dolly doubled down and proudly celebrated the ‘Backwoods Barbie’ label, releasing a song and album of the same name in 2008.
Beneath the artifice of her glamorous exterior lay a true heart of gold seemingly devoid of malice or cynicism. Outside of music, Dolly devoted herself and her fortune to helping her fellow human beings, leaving a legacy of philanthropy that has actually made the world a better place.
Through the non-profit Dollywood Foundation, founded in 1988, Dolly contributed substantially to improving education outcomes for children in her home county of Sevier, Tennessee. Since 1995, the Imagination Library, also part of the Dollywood Foundation, has provided nearly 200 million free, monthly books to more than 120 million children around the world.

Dolly Parton always saw the best in humanity and never let anyone, or anything, erode her inherent kindness and perpetual optimism. It lives on in the work of the Dollywood Foundation, which continues to help fund vital medical research, provide community aid and disaster relief, and support animal welfare and environmental conservation programmes, among other causes that were close to Dolly’s heart.
In so many ways, Dolly Parton transcended the limiting borders of genre, culture, and social status. She released her 49th and final album ‘Rockstar’ in 2023, a collaborative project featuring some of the biggest names in rock. Her live concerts, films, and musicals attract audiences representing a broad cross-section of society, and few would have a bad word to say about her. She was a unifying force.
Although she never had children of her own, Dolly Parton emanated maternal warmth and comfort. In her own loving way and throughout a lifetime of good works, she raised a global family. Her goddaughter Miley Cyrus has paid emotional tribute to Dolly, remembering her as an angel and celebrating the love and light she brought to the world.
That light burned brightly for the 80 wonderful years Dolly Parton spent on this planet, every one of them a gift, and it will keep shining wherever a song, a story, or a small act of kindness carries her spirit forward.
