The situation is unfolding as authorities investigate, launching a massive manhunt for the unidentified shooter. Footage uploaded to social media shows a figure on the rooftops running away after the shooting. During the ensuing panic and confusion, a subject initially believed to be the shooter was taken into custody by the FBI and has since been released.
Who Is Charlie Kirk?
The 31-year-old husband and father of two was a contentious and often controversial figure in the MAGA movement who championed the ideal of free speech that is so ingrained in the American consciousness.
Founding the conservative youth activist organisation Turning Point USA in 2012, Charlie Kirk gained notoriety for his fierce public debating style. He famously conducted popular ‘Prove Me Wrong’ sessions at US college campuses in which he freely engaged with students on hot-button topics such as the Israel-Palestine conflict, immigration, crime, religion, the transgender and wider LGBTQI+ movement, race, and identity politics.
Videos of these impromptu debates earned him a huge following online and IRL, and Charlie was instrumental in securing the youth vote that helped Trump win the 2024 presidential election. Charlie adamantly believed he facilitated honest, open discussions that welcomed dissenting opinions and allowed for a free exchange of ideas.
But Charlie’s unashamed conviction in his conservative views and beliefs similarly made him an automatic enemy for his opposition. He continually expressed that college is a scam designed to indoctrinate students with overtly Leftist ideals, and he was highly critical of concepts such as Critical Race Theory and Diversity Equity and Inclusion. He emphatically argued against allowing children to transition sex, thought white privilege is a myth and upheld traditional family values.
Charlie was also a devout Christian, and this underpinned the majority of his arguments, often raising the ire of his opponents when he fell back on scripture to reinforce or substantiate his point. He presented himself as a straight, white, Christian male who, for better or worse, believed in the word of God and the endeavouring spirit of the American people.

There are those who saw Charlie as a repugnant, Christian conservative agitator and Republican mouthpiece who bullied people into intellectual submission with rhetoric and right-wing propaganda. His supporters on the other hand view the shooting as an outright act of political violence against the conservative cause, heralding warnings from commentators and pundits of a new civil war.
Comparisons have been drawn between Charlie Kirk’s shooting and that of civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr in 1968. Both were vocal campaigners for their respective causes who shared a vision for a truly united America where racial prejudice took a backseat to achieving common goals, and both were shot down in their prime during a public address.
