This week in entertainment news, we mourn the passing of a rock legend while taking stock of the new releases and tours coming our way.
Co-founding KISS guitarist Ace Frehley has passed away at the age of 74. The legendary rocker suffered a brain bleed following a recent fall in his studio that left him hospitalized and unable to continue with his current solo tour. Ace Frehley’s distinctive riffs and solos were an integral part of KISS’ early sound, inspiring subsequent generations of guitarists.
Adopting the persona of The Starman, Frehley embodied every aspect of rock and roll excess, much to the chagrin of his more business-minded bandmates Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons.
Ace’s penchant for indulgence led to his eventual dismissal from KISS in 1982, to be replaced by guitarists like Bruce Kulick and Tommy Thayer over the years. Yet, no-one has equaled the raw ferocity of what Ace brought to the band in its formative years, playing second fiddle to his definitive sound and style.
UK festival Mighty Hoopla has announced it’s heading to Australia for the first time early next year. The festival will hit Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Saturday 21 February next year, with US pop star Kesha already announced as headliner in addition to her national tour. Mighty Hoopla is renowned for resurrecting or reuniting pop acts from the ‘90s and noughties, such as B*Witched, Bananarama, All Saints, En Vogue, Lily Allen, and Liberty X.
UK pop star Lily Allen has surprised fans with an epic comeback, announcing the release of a new album written in just 10 days. Known for mid-noughties hits like ‘Smile’ and ‘Alfie’, Lily Allen is also said to be back on tour from next year.
Aussie singer-songwriter Matt Corby releases his new album ‘Tragic Magic’ on Friday 6 March. Spanning 13 tracks and co-produced with Chris Collins (Royel Otis, Middle Kids, Old Mervs), the album includes debut single ‘Long and Short’ and today’s release, the upbeat second single, ‘Burn It Down.’
“It’s awesome to finally be telling everyone about this album, ‘Tragic Magic’,” Matt says.
“We’ve been working on it for about 18 months and I’m really proud of it. It feels very reflective of where my life is at right now; how my family, my kids are the most important thing and watching them grow up has completely rewired my brain and outlook on life.”

His latest single ‘Lifetime Of Love’ arrives as a final sneak peek into his upcoming fourth studio album ‘Love Game’, which is released on Thursday 30 October.
Central Coast singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Darcy Piltz has today released his latest single ‘Wishing Your Life Away’; a grunge-tinged pop-punk tune that reflects on all the highs and lows of being in your 20s.
Sonically aligned with bands such as Dear Seattle, Luca Brasi and Sly Withers, Darcy manages to combine uplifting, emotive lyricism and crunchy, hard-hitting riffs perfectly on the track – laying it all out on the table with a passionate vocal performance. Darcy Plitz performs at Link & Pin (Woy Woy) 24 October and Six Strings Brewery on the Central Coast 11 November.
