The Daisycutters Clear The Vault With New Rarities Album
Local pop-punk legends The Daisycutters have delighted fans with the surprise release of their new album ‘Perfume and Cigarettes’, a collection of unheard and previously unreleased material.
“’Perfume and Cigarettes’ is 11 songs of old stuff we’ve had sitting around in boxes, old demos, rarities and B sides that we’ve finally gotten together onto one album,” frontman Cameron Wilson says.
“We’ve also rerecorded two old songs that we used to do back in the early noughties, and one of them is actually a song that was written in the ‘90s, like around ‘Kiss Me Stupid’ time. It’s always been a great song, but we had a bad experience demoing it a long time ago with a particular studio. We rerecorded them with Jeff Lovejoy at the start of the year and it was really cool playing songs we used to play as 20-something pop-punkers now as middle aged men.”
‘Perfume and Cigarettes’ plays like a nostalgic love letter, celebrating The Daisycutters’ more than 30-year affair with music and the relationship shared with their fans. For Cameron, the album presented a chance to lay it all on the line as a songwriter and reflect on the band’s immense body of work.
“It’s been quite nostalgic going back,” he says.
“I know that’s easy to say, but I listen to some of those songs, and I can hear where we were, and I can picture where I was living. The world was a more innocent place back then and we were young men without the stresses we have now – families, jobs and things. It takes me right back and I’m sure it takes the other guys back too to an amazing time.
“It’s been a really cathartic experience revisiting them and putting the collection together. Every song takes me right back there to where we were at the time. I’m really happy because there’s not a lyric or a line in a song in all those years that I cringe at. I’m really quite pleased at how lyrically and musically the quality is still there.”
The album was mastered by Matt Gray with vital support from MADCAP Global Music and Global Entertainment. ‘Perfume and Cigarettes’ encompasses the entirety of The Daisycutters’ history as a band, from their early days as a fresh-faced trio and garnering national recognition, to becoming a quartet and evolving into their current status as revered statesmen of rock.
“This is pretty much clearing the vault,” Cameron says.
“Some of them are really good songs that we demoed and the recording of some of them is really good, they’re recorded so well. There are a couple that were recorded for the second album that were all good to go until we wrote two new songs that bumped these other ones aside. Going back and revisiting them, I’m really impressed with how good the songs are and how they stack up.
“One of the songs that we recorded called ‘Everything you tried you failed’, that was going to be on the first album, but it got bumped because suddenly songs came along that we were more excited about. It’s been really good to revisit them and clear the vaults, just to be a nice line drawn in the path. Everything is out there now. We thought: ‘why have them in boxes when we can out them on the streams, get them out in the world and let everyone hear them.”
