Terence Stamp Passes Away, Aged 87
Beloved British actor Terence Stamp, known for roles in ‘Superman’ films and ‘The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’ has died, aged 87.
The veteran actor’s family released a statement announcing Terence Stamp had passed away over the weekend.
“He leaves behind an extraordinary body of work, both as an actor and as a writer that will continue to touch and inspire people for years to come,” they said.
“We ask for privacy at this sad time.”
Born in 1938, Terence Stamp was a prolific stage and screen actor who had his breakthrough role in the 1962 film ‘Billy Budd’. It earned him a Golden Globe Award, a BAFTA and a nomination for an Academy Award.
His career flourished through the swinging ‘60s with roles in ‘The Collector’, ‘Modesty Blaise’, ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’, ‘Poor Cow’, ‘Teorema’, ‘Spirits of the Dead’ and ‘The Mind of Mr Soames’.
Stamp carried himself with a brooding sophistication and menacing presence that became hallmarks of his performances.
In 1978, Terence inspired fear – and easily a few childhood nightmares – with his portrayal of the scorn of Krypton, General Zod in ‘Superman’, reprising the role for ‘Superman II’ in 1980. Two decades later, he also voiced Superman’s father Jor-El in the TV series ‘Smallville’
Terence was a relentless actor with an extensive filmography spanning nearly seven decades and brought fierce professionalism to every character he played. He is best remembered by Australian audiences for his groundbreaking performance as pithy transgender woman Bernadette Bassenger in the 1994 Aussie smash hit ‘The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’.
His acting work brought him to the highest echelons of Hollywood, even starring in ‘Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace’ in 1999, an experience he once described as “boring”.
The new millennium brought refreshed opportunities for the well-seasoned Stamp. He found no shortage of work in films like ‘Red Planet’, ‘Get Smart’, ‘Yes Man’, ‘The Adjustment Bureau’ and ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children’. Stamp’s final film role was in 2021 film ‘Last Night in Soho’.
