State Of Origin 2025: Game One

State Of Origin 2025 kicks off in Brisbane, as Queensland and New South Wales face off in Game One of rugby league’s fiercest rivalry.

The 2025 Ampol State Of Origin series gets underway at Suncorp Stadium in the heart of Queensland territory. The mighty Maroons will be pushing hard to retrieve the coveted title from the Blues and equalise the loss of last year’s defeat.

The 2025 Maroons squad, led by Head Coach Billy Slater, features a roster of fresh talent making their Origin debut, including Robert Toia (Sydney Roosters), Beau Fermor (Gold Coast Titans) and Trent Loiero (Melbourne Storm).

These newcomers will have the backing of established Origin players such as team captain Daly Cherry-Evans (Manly Sea Eagles) and Cameron Munster (Melbourne Storm), joined by NRL stars Kalyn Ponga (Newcastle Knights) and Valentine Holmes (St George Illawarra Dragons).

Meanwhile, Blues Head Coach Laurie Daley has named just one debutante for this year’s squad, Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs prop Max King. Daley has also selected Penrith Panthers and Australian captain Isaah Yeo to lead the team as captain for the first time. Reece Robson (North Queensland Cowboys) and Payne Haas (Brisbane Broncos).

Always a hotly contested competition, this year’s State Of Origin has not been without the customary pre-game drama and controversy. Maroons assistant coach Matt King has refuted claims of spying on the Blues training sessions. Spencer Leniu is still dealing with the fallout from his very public altercation with Johnathan Thurston, being labelled a ‘grub’ by News Corp media outlets.

Tempers are flared and reputations are on the line as the Maroons and Blues take the field at The Cauldron for the first instalment of the 2025 State Of Origin series. Footy fans at Suncorp Stadium will be treated to a roster of pre-game entertainment before kick-off at 8:05pm AEST.
