Socceroos Exit World Cup In Penalty Shootout

The Socceroos’ World Cup campaign has come to a heartbreaking end after being eliminated in a penalty shootout in Saturday’s match against Egypt.
Two missed penalties from Socceroos captain Harry Souttar and young gun Lucas Herrington handed Egypt the win in Dallas.
Australia had levelled the score 1-1 in the second half after conceding a soft goal in the first half. It all came down to the penalty shootout that saw Australia defeated by a 4-2 scoreline.
It will be at least another four years until Australia has its next chance to vie for its first knockout stage win.
“It’s tough,” Socceroos coach Tony Popovic said post-match.
“I think we showed the world that Australian football is strong. It’s a wonderful group and I’m devastated that we can’t progress.”
However, Popovic has been called out by commentators and furious fans scrutinizing his management of the penalty shootout.
Many are questioning why Patrick Beach was subbed out for Maty Ryan, especially considering Beach’s performance during the Egypt match and in Australia’s incredible win over Turkey, as well as his decision for the penalties to be taken by defensive players.
Egypt now proceeds to face off against Argentina in the Round of 16 following Cabo Verde’s 3-2 defeat in extra time.

It’s been an historic World Cup campaign for Australia in 2026, being only the third time ever the Socceroos have moved on from the group stage to the knockout stages.
Australia started strong with a resounding 2-0 victory against Turkey that proved the team is more than capable of performing on the world stage. Then came a devastating 2-0 loss to the USA and a draw with Paraguay that secured their place in the knockout phase for a consecutive World Cup.
Australian fans have also made an impression on the 2026 World Cup, showing up in droves to support the Socceroos and show their pride in true Aussie style.
Despite our untimely exit from the 2026 World Cup, Australia has positioned itself as a promising contender for future series with a formidable performance this year.
