In Memory Of Guitarist Dion Hirini
Words: Matt Innes
The music industry is mourning the loss of guitarist Dion Hirini, who passed away unexpectedly last week.
Dion had been on tour with Row Jerry Crow band and passed away from a heart condition while travelling home from one of the shows in regional Victoria on 12 March.
Born in New Zealand and raised in the Australian Outback, Dion settled in Melbourne where he became a beloved and respected member of the musical community.
He has performed with some of Australia’s top acts, including Paul Kelly, Kasey Chambers, Tina Arena, Vanessa Amorosi and Vika & Linda Bull. Dion also performed with Vika in ‘At Last: The Etta James Story’.
“We lost our brother Dion,” Vika and Linda posted to social media.
“We always called him the third Bull Sister and our hearts are broken. Thank you for so many beautiful moments we spent together. We love you D.”
Row Jerry Crow band also paid tribute:
“It’s with a broken heart that the crew from The Crow farewell our dear friend and mentor Dion Hirini.
“(He) had a taste and feel like no other. He had a warmth in his smile that would immediately initiate friendship. We have lost a great of the Australian music scene and although the ship is still upright, we sail on with wet sheets and soft tailwind.
“See you in the big show in the sky brother, and book us a table.”
MADCAP Global extends our condolences to Dion’s family, friends and colleagues. He will be remembered fondly for his incredible talent and kind spirit.
