Black Sabbath Bids Farewell

It was the end of an era on Saturday when Ozzy Osbourne performed live for the last time ever, reuniting with Black Sabbath for their final show in their hometown of Birmingham, England.

A 40,000-strong crowd of heavy metal fans gathered in Villa Park soccer stadium to witness the Prince of Darkness himself deliver a genre-defining sermon, belting out classic Black Sabbath songs. Seated in a black throne, Ozzy Osbourne was joined by original Black Sabbath members guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward.

Heavy metal and hard rock royalty were also in attendance for the ‘Back to the Beginning’ show, including Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Pantera, Alice In Chains, Lamb of God and more. Fans were treated to a spectacular solo performance by Ozzy before he was joined by his bandmates for a powerful set, finishing with ‘Paranoid’.

It was the thrilling finale to a day of heavy metal hosted by actor Jason Momoa, who enthusiastically jumped in to the mosh pit for Pantera’s set.

Founded in 1968, Black Sabbath are a British heavy metal institution and one of the most influential bands of all time. Their first two albums, ‘Black Sabbath’ and ‘Paranoid’ laid the groundwork for the heavy metal genre, incorporating detuned guitars, thumping bass, and pounding drums with Satanic imagery and lyrics that explored occult themes.

The first incarnation of the band split when Ozzy left in 1978 to record his solo project ‘Blizzard Of Ozz’. He briefly returned to the band in 1979 before being fired for his drug and alcohol abuse. As Ozzy pursued a very successful solo career spanning decades, Black Sabbath continued recording and performing in various line-ups.

Ronnie James Dio stepped into Ozzy’s shoes for three albums, including Black Sabbath’s first live album ‘Live Evil’. Deep Purple singer Glenn Hughes also performed vocal duties for a period in the ‘80s. At one point, Iommi was the only original member in the group.

But nothing beats the original, and fans were not disappointed to see Ozzy, Tony, Geezer, and Bill perform together one final time. At 76, Ozzy Osbourne still knows how to work a crowd, despite his health issues. In 2003, Ozzy had a near-fatal quad bike accident and in 2020 he revealed he had diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease that has affected his mobility.

‘Back to the Beginning’ was a celebration befitting the incredible legacy of Black Sabbath and their immense impact on music.
